Fighting Irish receive more green than ever
A 49-year-old California computer executive, Thomas F. Mendoza, and his wife, Kathy, have donated $35 million to the University of Notre Dame, his alma mater. The donation is the largest the school has ever received, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Mendoza is a senior vice president of sales and marketing for the high-tech Atherton, Calif.-based Network Appliance firm. Kathy Mendoza also works for Network Appliance, named as one of the fastest-growing companies in the nation last year. Mendoza told the newspaper attending Notre Dame in the early 1970s taught him to focus on doing the right thing.
University officials said they have not yet decided how to use the money, but a large portion will likely go into the school's endowment.
Notre Dame president Rev. Edward A. Malloy said the school plans to rename its business college after Mendoza.
The previous top donations Notre Dame has received were:
$33 million from mall developer Edward J. DeBartolo in 1989;
$15 million from the estate of oilman William J. Carey in 1999;
$10 million from the Kellogg Foundation in 1979;
and $10 million from an anonymous donor in 1997.
