The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the latest group to help the flood-ravaged regions of Mozambique. The foundation gave a total of $1,050,000 to three international aid groups that provide medical and relief supplies, and help families back on their feet.
Each of the three grants -- worth $350,000 -- went to the American Red Cross, CARE and Save the Children.
In addition to the $350,000 Gates gift, the Red Cross received an additional $100,000 gift from the Monsanto Fund -- the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Co. -- to support the relief efforts. The Red Cross will use the $450,000 contributions to provide supplied ranging from medical kits to water purification supplies.
The Gates gift will allow CARE to build camps for flood victims and provide food, water and sanitation services.
Save the Children will distribute food, water, seeds and family reunification services in the Gaza province.
In addition to the Gates donation for relief supplies, Save the Children is getting a donation of instant film and cameras -- enough to produce 3,000 images -- from the Polaroid Corp. to help reunite children with their families.
Save the Children is photographing children registered at its Chiaquelane refugee camp. The photos are circulated in refugee camps around Mozambique to help families reunite.
