A New Jersey politician who has served time for bribery and money-laundering set up a $1.3 million charity whose only contributions appear to benefit its founder, the Bergen, N.J., Record reports.
Thomas D'Alessio, a former Essex County official, transferred money from his $2 million election fund to the Evergreen Fund Foundation Inc., two months after being paroled for accepting a $59,000 bribe from a Florida garbage-hauling company, the paper reports. The fund transfer is legal under New Jersey law.
The tax-exempt foundation's address is listed as D'Alessio's home. He is also the nonprofit's executive director.
A filing D'Alessio made with New Jersey's secretary of state to set up the Evergreen Fund said the foundation would make grants to children's organizations. The only money spent by the foundation so far has been to lease a new Mercedes Benz, according to corporate filings.
The foundation is late on an annual report to the IRS that was due in May. Other people listed as corporate officers for the foundation have said they don't know anything about its operations or charitable contributions, the paper reports. D'Alessio declined to comment about the fund to the paper.
