Human rights campaign nearing its $45M goal

Human Rights Watch has announced it is more than halfway towards reaching its $45 million endowment goal, which was publicly launched Sept. 15.

The group already has secured cash and pledges of $38 million from less than 50 donors, Human Rights Watch organizers report. The money will be added to the endowment and used to supplement the group's current $15 million annual budget.

The endowment will support the group's ability to respond to human right emergencies anywhere in the world. It will also provide money for programs in areas of the world that do not get much outside funding.

The $38 million already received comes from various foundations and individual contributions:

  • $10 million from the Sandler Family Supporting Foundation of Oakland, Calif.
  • $5 million from Irene Diamond, in addition to her earlier pledge
  • $5 million from Fiona and Stanley Druckenmiller
  • $5 million from The Ford Foundation
  • $5 million from John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Other donors have set up several $1-million endowed funds.

Human Rights Watch -- founded 1978 -- has grown to be one of the largest U.S.-based human rights groups. It has offices in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, London, Brussels, Moscow, Hong Kong and Rio de Janeiro.
