Nonprofits are expected to benefit from the innovations at two websites that tout online shopping as the newest way to raise money for charity.
GreaterGood.com and Working Assets plan to use money spent by some of the estimated 56 million online shoppers to benefit nonprofit groups.
Working Assets, a long distance, credit card and Internet company, launched ShopForChange.com, which gives shoppers access to 40 online retailers. ShopForChange gives five percent of the price of every purchase to nonprofit groups working for peace, human rights, equality, education and the environment.
ShopForChange's goal is to raise $5 million in donations during its first year. That will be added to the $16 million in donations raised by Working Assets since 1985.
GreaterGood has announced all qualified 501(c)(3)nonprofits can now apply online for a free customized "shopping village" to be integrated into their own websites, where 5 percent or more of every purchase is automatically directed to their cause.
A link button is placed on the nonprofit's website. When supporters click on it, they have their choice of shopping in any of 33 brand-name stores, such as Amazon.com, OfficeMax, eToys or J. Crew.
To participate in GreaterGood's shopping/donation service, interested parties can fill out an application online at GreaterGood.com.
