It's Time to Cast Your Vote
The United States has a national emblem, the bald eagle: a national anthem, the "Star Spangled Banner": a national motto, "In God We Trust": a national flower, the rose, and even a national march, "Stars and Stripes Forever". While we do have these proud symbols, one group recognizes that we do not have a national tree; and they intend to do something about it. The National Arbor Day Foundation is hosting a process that will allow people to vote online or by mail for their choice of this new national symbol.
"America has the grandest trees on earth - the largest, the oldest, and we think, the most beautiful," said John Rosenow, president of The National Arbor Day Foundation. It's time for the American people to select a national tree as an enduring symbol of all of our magnificent trees, and of our national heritage."
There are no political party restrictions, age doesn't matter, nor does occupation. This opportunity is open to every man, woman and child in the country. If someone doesn't have online access, they are invited to mail their vote to the Foundation. Once the votes are counted, the results will be made to members of Congress, which must officially designate America's National Tree.
One group in California developed a platform for the Giant Sequoia. "We are proud of the Giant Sequoia's standing in American history, its towering presence when compared to the other National Tree candidates and that Sequoia National Park provides the best opportunity to experience its immense natural beauty", said Tom McFadden, General Manager of Delaware North Parks Services operations at the Sequoia National Park. Online visitors can learn more about this candidate's platform at www.VisitSequoia.com.
Don't wait too long to research and cast your ballot. You may vote online through midnight April 26.
