America Online Inc. has announced that B. Keith Fulton, former director of the National Urban League'stechnology programs, will head its corporate outreach campaign to help bridge the digital divide.
Fulton, an outspoken advocate of the Internet's importance in solving social inequities, will take over as AOL's executive director of corporate outreach, to and help expand what the company calls its "commitment to increase the positive impact of the Internet on society."
"I'm eager to take on the challenge of continuing AOL's great tradition in this area as well as offering new ideas to forge ahead in the effort to ensure that no one is left behind in the Internet age," Fulton said.
One of Fulton's rallying cries for making information technology available and understandable to as many people as possible -- especially minorities -- is for people who are already tech-savvy to pass on their knowledge. Fulton discussed this and other ideas in a column for PNN and other features.
"Like the traditional basics, information literacy is something that you will use and build on from the cradle to the grave," Fulton wrote. "Once acquired, information literacy will be your master key to the gateway of life-long learning and interactive computing in the next millennium."
Fulton will report to David Eisner, AOL's vice president of corporate relations. Eisner acknowledged the respect the Internet community has for Fulton and the record of leadership he has established helping reshape people's lives.
"Together, we will redouble our efforts to bring the power of the Internet to all people, regardless of income, race, geography, or disability," Eisner said.
Fulton integrated information technology into the business of community-based organizations in his decade with the National Urban League.
