14th Street-Union Square Business Improvement District and Local Development Corporation
New York, NY
THE OPPORTUNITY
The 14th Street-Union Square Business Improvement District and Local Development Corporation (14th Street-Union Square) are conducting a search to identify their next Executive Director. These organizations have worked hard to foster the area’s emergence as a thriving business center, residential neighborhood and entertainment destination. The Board is looking for a leader who will maintain and build on the momentum that has already been established.
Over a 20-year period, the LDC/BID have led the effort to transform Union Square/14th Street from an economically depressed, crime-ridden area into a showcase of urban success as a commercial destination, particularly for small businesses and restaurants, a thriving residential neighborhood as well as a caring community, and a center for major educational and cultural institutions. In tandem, the two organizations plan and implement a wide range of community-based programs, including business development, education and entertainment. The organizations work daily with various city departments and agencies to ensure the effective application of public services such as transportation, parks, security and sanitation. In addition, the BID maintains supplemental sanitation and public safety programs.
THE POSITION
The Executive Director serves as the person with day-to-day responsibility for running the organizations. He/she reports to the Boards of Directors and supervises a staff of 15 with a budget of approximately $1.8 million. The Executive Director will work closely with the BID and LDC boards on program creation and implementation. Another priority will be to foster board development and help to ensure that board members are actively engaged.
The Board is seeking a strong leader with excellent oral and written communication skills. This individual will be energetic, intellectually astute, highly analytical, and will demonstrate the desire and skill to maintain the 14th Street-Union Square’s high standing. The person will build relationships in the community and be able to articulate the goals and vision of the organization.
In addition, the individual will have excellent judgment and decision-making abilities. He/she will be politically astute and comfortable dealing at all levels of government. The person will be prepared to represent the agency at public forums including city and state hearings. He/she will have strong diplomatic skills that can be used both internally and externally.
Candidates should have a strong appreciation for and be capable of leading the 14th Street-Union Square fundraising and development efforts, which are critical to the on-going success of the organization.
The successful candidate will also have an effective personal management style. He or she will be a strong team player who fosters a dynamic work environment, and will have demonstrated experience in supervising, training and promoting a diverse work force.
Private sector experience is helpful, but the candidate most likely will have spent time in the public or not-for-profit sectors. He or she will be accustomed to working under intense public scrutiny. Experience working in a New York City setting is desirable. It will also be important for the candidates to be sensitive to the highly diverse community, which the organizations serve.
The candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year institution, and an advanced degree in business, public administration, or a related field is a plus.
The candidate will be expected to live in the New York City area. Compensation is expected to be $125,000-$150,000 range plus benefits.
