Blood supply is low nationwide, Red Cross needs donations

American Red Cross The American Red Cross is reporting that most of their 37 Blood Services regions have less than a one-day supply of the universally used Type O blood, a critical situation nationwide.

All blood types are urgently needed following this season's flu outbreak nationwide, the Red Cross reports. Type O blood donors are specifically being requested, due to the type's use in emergencies.

Blood donations were strong during December, but the organization saw a decline during the holidays late in the month.

Eligible donors -- those at least 17 years old and weighing more than 110 pounds -- are being asked to call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-35433) to make an appointment. A steady flow of donors is needed to stabilize the blood supply.

Although donating blood takes less than one hour, the Red Cross reports that only 5 percent of eligible Americans donate blood. The organization provides more than six million units of blood nationwide every year.
