A $1.9 million donation from the Duffield Family Foundation will be used by the Oakland, Calif. SPCA chapter to build another local shelter and phase out euthanasia of stray dogs and cats, the Contra Costa, (Calif.) Times reports.
The local SPCA will use the money to open a pet adoption and owner education center combined with a spay-neuter clinic in the town of Dublin, Calif. The Dublin clinic will only accept "second-chance" animals that have not been placed by other facilities.
A portion of the grant also goes to the Oakland SPCA's "Goal 2007" campaign, which coordinates local pet neutering and spaying efforts with adoption programs geared to stop the euthanasia of stray animals by the year 2007.
The Oakland animal shelter is working with former Oakland Athletics and current St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation and local groups to establish a network of physical and virtual pet adoption sites.
