Kohl's rings up cash for charities

From the Charlotte Observer

Milwaukee-based Kohl's department store chain has found a way to solve its need for hourly workers during the back-to-school rush while giving charities an innovative way to raise money: volunteers work for the store and have their hourly wages donated to nonprofits, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Volunteers are paid $6.25 an hour and work either as baggers or dressing room attendants during specified heavy shopping days. The workers - who must be at least 18 - also are given a one-time Kohl's discount card for their efforts.

The Kohl's chain offers the program nationwide.

"We use volunteer organizations all year-round. We use them very heavily from back-to-school to Christmas," says Suzette Vlasich, manager of a Kohl's store in Gastonia, N.C. "It's nice to know that people are out there who want to do it."
