Thirty-nine individual volunteers and organizations have been recognized for their outstanding community service with the President's Service Awards, presented at the White House this week.
The list of honorees includes a teenager, senior citizens, a group of dental care providers, a labor union and many others, according to a sponsor news release. Eighteen of the 39 winners actually were given the award in 1998, but were unable to attend the ceremony that year.
The awards, sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and the Corporation for National Service, are given for community service directed at solving the nation's "critical social problems."
The honorees were selected from over 3,000 nominations this year in four categories: human needs, education, environment, and public safety.
"The entries for this program reflect the commitment and dedication of everyone engaged in volunteer efforts underway in our communities," stated Robert K. Goodwin, president and chief executive officer of the Points of Light Foundation. "Thirty-nine people are getting awards, but every entry is rewarding. We salute all of the efforts."
Nomination forms for the 2000 President's Service Awards will be made available on the Points of Light Foundation's Web site in November.
