GuideStar gets $3.5 million to boost web services

GuideStar has received a total of $3.5 million in grants to promote its online public information service about American nonprofits.

GuideStar provides information on each of the more than 600,000 groups with 501(c)(3) registration from the IRS. Each GuideStar listing is based on information provided by IRS Form 990 for nonprofits exceeding $25,000 in annual revenues, and on responses to GuideStar's own survey.

Recent donations to GuideStar include:

  • $1.05 million over three years from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to promote nonprofit participation in Guidestar's database and increase public awareness of the service.
  • $750,000 over three years from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for general operating expenses.
  • $300,000 over three years from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund for general operating expenses.
  • $250,000 from the Philanthropic Collaborative for general operating expenses.
