The Center for Rural Development of Southern and Eastern Kentucky will receive technology assistance from FVC.Com to link 40 rural counties in a high-tech video and Internet system.
The CenterNet effort will use FVC.Com streaming-video technology to provide Internet connectivity and video broadcasting, conferencing and video-on-demand services for local governments, schools, nonprofit groups and individuals.
Plans for CenterNet include distance learning programs, remote medical consulting, job training and other community development efforts.
The goal is to have a CenterNet site within driving distance by all residents of Kentucky's most rural counties.
The nonprofit Somerset, Ky.-based Center for Rural Development operates on federal and state grants, private donations and user fees. The CenterNet program is funded by a Small Business Administration grant.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based FVC.Com manufactures and supports interactive and streaming video products. It has partnered with GTE and Nortel Networks for the CenterNet project.
