Giants' Kent going to bat for charity

From the San Jose Mercury News

Forget Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Ken Griffey Jr. The real hitting action is in San Francisco, as the Giants' Jeff Kent racks up $900 for every run he bats in this season. All the money goes to a University of California women's sports scholarship program Kent founded this year, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

The Women Driven fund is expected to generate about $100,000 this season, depending on Kent's performance at the plate. He donates $500 for each run he knocks in, and four other corporations have each also pledged $100 per RBI to go along with Kent's contribution.

The fund has already given seven $15,000 scholarships to female Cal athletes in five sports - field hockey, golf, softball, track and field, and volleyball - for this school year. Additional money raised by the end of the season will go to scholarships for next year.

Kent told the paper he wanted to help women's sports in part as a tribute to his two-year-old daughter, Lauren. He chose Cal because it is his alma mater.
