Toy company Hasbro Inc. will donate $6 million in merchandise and cash to end its involvement in an unfair-practices lawsuit that includes two other manufacturers and the Toys "R" Us retail chain, the New York Times reports.
The original suit filed by New York State Attorney General Dennis Vacco claimed Hasbro, Toys "R" Us, Mattel Inc. and Little Tikes Co. joined together to prevent retailers such as membership clubs from offering toys at lower prices, the Times reports.
Hasbro has offered to donate $3.57 million in toys to all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The toy maker also would pay $2.38 million in cash to the states for toys and educational material, the Times reports.
The offer calls for the donations to be distributed to children through the U.S. Marine Corp's Toys for Tots program. But because the settlement offer must still be approved by the courts, it is unclear whether the toys will be distributed in time for this Christmas holiday.
Toys "R" Us attorneys also are considering a settlement in the case, the Times reports.
