Sister continues Buffett family philanthropy with "sunbeams" of help

From the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer

The 70-year-old sister of billionaire Warren Buffett continues the family's charitable giving in an unusual way: she provides hundreds of people $10,000 a year each to give to groups large and small, the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reports.

Doris Bryant, who moved from Omaha, Neb., to North Carolina eight years ago, formed the Sunshine Lady Foundation in 1996 after her mother died and left her a fortune. Bryant has 130 people, known as "sunbeams," help make her foundation's work more effective by giving money to groups that might otherwise be overlooked.

The "Sunshine Lady," as Bryant is known, hopes to have 200 sunbeams working across the state. Right now, she's searching for six sunbeams on the Davidson College campus. Applicants must write a two-page summary by Sept. 30 describing how they can "spread a kindly light on the world."

The foundation has given away nearly $3 million to a wide variety of causes, including cancer research, domestic violence prevention, historic preservation, medicine for the poor and a college scholarship program for Carteret County, N.C., residents.
