Colorado school gets $4M from cable pioneer

The University of Northern Colorado has received $4 million from alumnus and cable TV pioneer Bill Daniels to fund scholarships and new construction, the Rocky Mountain News of Denver reports.

The $4 million will be divided in the following manner:

  • $1 million will establish a scholarship fund in honor of Joe Tennessen, a Daniels friend and UNC supporter.
  • $1 million for the Hank Brown Scholarship Fund in honor of UNC's current president. Brown also has been a U.S. senator and congressman.
  • $2 million for other scholarships and new building projects.

The Greeley, Colo., school has an enrollment of nearly 10,900 students.

Daniels, the 78-year-old chairman of the Daniels and Associates media and telecommunications investment bank, is regarded as "the father of cable television."

His gift to UNC is the latest in a series of donations to higher education.

The Greeley resident last year gave the University of Denver a $1.75 million mansion for the chancellor's residence. Daniels has so far contributed $24.2 million to the university.
