Tiny Converse College lands big gifts

Converse College has received two gifts from anonymous donors worth a combined $4.2 million, the Associated Press reports.

The larger gift is worth $2.2 million and is designated for facility improvements, scholarships and the endowment. The $2 million gift will go to Converse's endowment.

The donations are important to the private women's college because it is in the middle of an ambitious $30 million capital campaign, the AP reports.

If the Spartanburg, S.C., school meets an April 1 deadline, it will receive a matching $15 million gift from longtime university supporters George Dean Johnson and his wife, Susan Phifer Johnson. The Johnson's gift would be the largest single donation to a private college in South Carolina history, the AP reports.

Susan Johnson is a Converse alumna. Her husband is a trustee.

The liberal arts college was founded in 1889. It has 1,150 undergraduate and graduate students.
