Study: Southeast is better in terms of giving, assets
Foundation giving and asset growth for the Southeastern region is growing much faster than the national average, according to a study conducted by the New York-based Foundation Center.
The study shows that giving by Southeastern foundations rose to $2 billion, up 74 percent since 1992. Assets of grantmakers in the region more than doubled, up 108 percent to $39.1 billion. Some key factors spurring this growth were a booming U.S. economy, the growing stock market and the increase in new foundations.
The study was part of "Southeastern Foundations II: A Profile of the Region's Grantmaking Community." It was conducted by the Foundation Center in cooperation with the Southeastern Council of Foundations. "Southeastern Foundations II" notes the continuing growth of foundation philanthropy in a 12-state region, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
Also included in the study was a comprehensive overview of grantmaking in the region, a section on how new features expand understanding of Southeastern foundations and ordering information for other Foundation Center research studies.
