The Mark McGwire Foundation for Children, founded by the home-run king to help prevent child abuse, has been given a Web home by Internet media giant Yahoo! Inc.
In addition to developing and hosting the McGwire Foundation Web site, the company's contributions also include banner advertising donations on Yahoo's other sites, a cash contribution of an undisclosed amount and traditional print and radio advertising featuring McGwire.
The St. Louis Cardinals first baseman launched the foundation in 1997 with a pledge of $1 million a year for three years out of his own pocket. He issued the first grants last year and produced a series of public service advertisements that aired during the 1998 World Series.
The McGwire Foundation site includes numerous links to Web-based support for both children and adults.
The donation of money and services comes from the Internet company's Yahoo! For Kids philanthropic arm, which supports designated nonprofit groups that focus on children's issues. A spokeswoman for Yahoo! said the amount of the cash contribution would not be disclosed.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based Yahoo! has supported more than 400 not-for-profit groups worldwide through online campaigns, volunteer services and cooperative marketing sponsorships since the company was founded.
