Late entrepreneur's donations to university top $46M

A $10 million gift to the University of Minnesota is the latest in a series of donations that late entrepreneur and school alumnus, Curt Carlson, made to the school, the St. Paul Pioneer Press of St. Paul, Minnesota reports.

Before his death in February, the Carlson Companies Inc. founder decided to leave $8 million to the Carlson School of Management, which bears his name, and another $2 million to the university's alumni and visitor center, slated to open in the fall.

The $10 million gift, announced Friday by the Carlson Family Foundation, brings to $36 million the philanthropist's contributions to the school of management, the newspaper reports.

Carlson's total donations to the university have reached $46.5 million.

He graduated from University of Minnesota in 1937 with a degree in economics and built his fortune in the hotel, restaurant and travel industries.

Carlson gave $18 million to the business school in 1986, after which the school was renamed in his honor. There are at least seven chairs or professorships funded by Carlson endowments at the management school. The latest $8 million is expected to be used to recruit faculty members and students as well as market the school better.
