The AOL Foundation has announced a program in which it is providing for students at a Washington high school incentives to do well in school and graduate.
The program, called AOL Achievers, pledges scholarships, free SAT prep courses and AOL employee mentors to Calvin Coolidge High School students who do well in their studies. The foundation also is providing the high school 30 computers and services from America Online, the foundation says.
The program was announced by America Online chairman and CEO Steve Case at an assembly of Coolidge High students.
Under the program, students are eligible to receive a $500 scholarship toward post-secondary education for each semester they receive a combined grade point average of 3.5. Additionally, each semester, one student per grade level who shows the most improved grades, regardless of GPA, will receive this grant.
Also, AOL will match employee volunteers to mentor students. Once a student qualifies to be an AOL Achiever, he or she will be paired with a mentor, based on academic, career and personal interests, the foundation says.
The program includes experimenting with new approaches for using technology to help students, such as an online area where students can access mentoring through chat rooms and e-mail; online access to college prep materials; and AOL's educational content and online assistance. Students also will have access to online courses to help them improve their study skills, the foundation says.
