Tycoon's gift will help build cancer-research center, outpatient clinic

Businessman Phil Anschutz gave $25 million to the University of Colorado's new Fitzsimons campus to build a cancer research and outpatient clinic, the Denver Rocky Mountain News reports.

The gift from the billionaire's Anschutz Foundation is more than twice as large as any single gift ever made to the Colorado University (CU).

The 540,000-square-foot clinics will be named the Anschutz Centers for Advanced Medicine and are slated to open in November, the newspaper reports. They will focus on patient care, research, education and doctor training.

Anschutz's gift will allow the university's cancer center to rank among the top 10 in the nation, the newspaper reports.

Anschutz -- one of the world's wealthiest men -- is former head of Union Pacific and owns stakes in telecommunications and oil companies and a variety of pro sports franchises. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas.
