Westin Hotels & Resorts expects to raise $2 million for a United Nations program that works to provide vitamin A supplements to Third World children.
Westin plans to launch in May a program called Check Out for Children in which guests will have the opportunity to make a $1 donation to UNICEF. A $1 donation is enough to provide a year's supply of vitamin A for more than 16 children, the company says.
The company hopes the program will raise enough money to improve nutrition for more than 32 million children in the first year.
Westin's sister company, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, has raised more than $3 million for UNICEF's immunization efforts since 1995. The Sheraton program focuses on its hotels in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The Westin and Sheraton chains are owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts.
Vitamin A supplementation is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to improve children's health. Approximately, 100 million young children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, making them vulnerable to infections. The lack of vitamin A contributes to 3.2 million child deaths each year.
