A newly released Bridgespan Group study of U.S. government funded human service nonprofits shows that while many have survived the harsh economy of the last few years, 91% fear that looming federal funding cuts will “cause significant problems” for them.

Nearly two-thirds said that they expect their government funding to shrink over the next two-to-three years, with the harshest cuts anticipated to programs serving the most vulnerable populations such as the elderly and homeless. Adding to that fear is uncertainty as to how the cuts will be made and what their exact impact will be.
Rising costs of healthcare, pensions, Social Security and Medicare, driven by changing demographics, are drawing down dollars available for social services. According to Daniel Stid, Bridgespan partner and co-author of the study with his colleague Vishal Shah, “This grinding down on all other budget items is about to accelerate in the wake of the Budget Control Act of 2011 ...

McKim Consulting, a leader in nonprofit sustainability solutions just released the report for their first annual Nonprofit Leadership Survey 2011.
The survey was sent to over 1500 leaders in the greater Los Angeles nonprofit community and reveals trends that are significant to all involved. The Nonprofit Leadership Survey reveals that nonprofits are currently challenged and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future.
“Looking closely at the results, this really is the proverbial ‘canary in the coalmine,’” says Robert McKim, CEO. “We already knew that there were many nonprofits that would be suffering in the wake of the economy. Just how badly and how severe the impact is likely to be in the year to come, well, even if we sort of knew, seeing it in black and white made it worse.”
Not surprising, agencies are experiencing increased need for their services and few expect to reduce their activities or ...

The Minnesota Council on Foundations (MCF) today reported that the state’s grantmakers expect relatively stable giving in 2012. According to MCF’s 2012 Outlook Report, foundations and corporations believe their grantmaking will remain flat or possibly increase about one percent from 2011.
“Grantmaking stability is a huge plus, especially during times of continuing unpredictability elsewhere,” says Bill King, MCF President. “Minnesota philanthropists have been giving well over $1 billion annually for a decade now and have weathered the volatile economy of the past few years with relatively minor fluctuations in their giving.”
MCF’s 2012 Outlook Report is based on an October/November 2011 survey of 104 Minnesota foundations and corporate giving programs that represent 76 percent (or about $1 billion) of all Minnesota annual grantmaking.
Most Grantmakers Maintaining Priorities
Seventy percent of grantmakers anticipate that their funding priorities will remain constant in 2012, which is almost a 10-point increase over what they predicted for 2011.

Women’s eNews, a nonprofit news service covering issues of particular concern to women, has announced the 21 Leaders for the 21st Century 2012. They will be honored Thursday, May 3, 2012 at a gala dinner held in New York’s Jumeirah Essex House.
“The 21 Leaders list is a rare ‘best of’ list that doesn’t rely on the achievements of men and champions a focus on women’s lives around the world,” said Rita Henley Jensen, founder and editor in chief of Women’s eNews. “We include one man on the list,” Henley Jensen added, “because male allies in the push for equality are essential and recognition of their work is scarce as well.”
The 21 Leaders for the 21st Century 2012 have all demonstrated outstanding achievements in business, education, philanthropy and the media. Seven honorees are intensely engaged in changing the power balance in the political world through training and recruitment of ...

Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust today announced grants totaling $4.7 million—an infusion of funds for the nonprofit community that will advance their work in the areas of arts and culture, services for disadvantaged children, youth mentoring, higher education research initiatives and civic engagement opportunities for older adults. A $3 million grant will expand the Center for Sustainable Health at Arizona State University (ASU).
“Virginia Galvin Piper, who would have been 100 years old this past December [December 7, 2011], has had her grantmaking legacy in Maricopa County for 11 years now through Piper Trust. The diversity and quality shown in today’s collection of grant awards is a meaningful representation of Mrs. Piper’s wishes to strengthen and grow our community—she would be pleased,” said Judy Jolley Mohraz, Ph.D., president and CEO, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.
The Trust’s investment to expand ASU’s Center for Sustainable Health will further the Center’s innovative work addressing ...

The Colorado Trust today announced it has made $28,500 in grants to strengthen the work of five nonprofit organizations working to improve the health and well-being of rural Coloradans. The Colorado Trust, a grantmaking foundation dedicated to expanding health coverage and improving health care for all Coloradans, made the grants after meeting with nonprofit organizations at Rural Philanthropy Days in Saguache, Colorado.
Rural Philanthropy Days (RPD) connects funders with nonprofit organizations that serve rural Colorado. This three-day event, which takes place twice each year, was created in 1991 by the Community Resource Center (CRC) to strengthen nonprofit-funder relations and to address critical needs in rural communities across Colorado.
“Growing up in a doctor’s family in La Junta, Colorado, I know firsthand how important access to health is in rural communities,” said Ned Calonge, MD, President and CEO of The Colorado Trust. “Rural Philanthropy Days offers us a unique opportunity to see the ...

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) today circulated a letter urging the Senate Finance Committee and the Members of Congress who were members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction to preserve the current charitable deduction during future tax discussions.
AFP, the chair of a coalition of nonprofit organizations and umbrella groups, anticipates that Congress will continue to pursue ways to reduce the deficit and implement tax reforms in 2012, even though the Join Select Committee on Deficit Reduction was unable to agree upon any recommendations.
During the joint committee’s work, it was reported that Republicans were open to eliminating certain tax deductions, including charitable deductions, for the wealthy in exchange for a permanent reduction of the marginal tax rates set under President George W. Bush. Simultaneously, the Democrats appeared open to capping the tax reduction that high income taxpayers can get from tax expenditures (such as itemized deductions like the ...

The Winn-Dixie Foundation announced today it is investing nearly $1.4 million in neighborhoods across the Southeast through partnerships with 116 nonprofit organizations, providing a broad range of services critical to helping communities flourish and individuals triumph.
“Winn Dixie is at the heart of the neighborhoods we serve,” said Mary Kellmanson, marketing group vice-president of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., and president of the Winn-Dixie Foundation. “We are inspired by the stories we hear from past recipients, and we look forward to seeing the good work our newest partners will do in the coming year.
