The Minnesota Council on Foundations (MCF) today reported that the state’s grantmakers expect relatively stable giving in 2012. According to MCF’s 2012 Outlook Report, foundations and corporations believe their grantmaking will remain flat or possibly increase about one percent from 2011.
“Grantmaking stability is a huge plus, especially during times of continuing unpredictability elsewhere,” says Bill King, MCF President. “Minnesota philanthropists have been giving well over $1 billion annually for a decade now and have weathered the volatile economy of the past few years with relatively minor fluctuations in their giving.”
MCF’s 2012 Outlook Report is based on an October/November 2011 survey of 104 Minnesota foundations and corporate giving programs that represent 76 percent (or about $1 billion) of all Minnesota annual grantmaking.
Most Grantmakers Maintaining Priorities
Seventy percent of grantmakers anticipate that their funding priorities will remain constant in 2012, which is almost a 10-point increase over what they predicted for 2011.

Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust today announced grants totaling $4.7 million—an infusion of funds for the nonprofit community that will advance their work in the areas of arts and culture, services for disadvantaged children, youth mentoring, higher education research initiatives and civic engagement opportunities for older adults. A $3 million grant will expand the Center for Sustainable Health at Arizona State University (ASU).
“Virginia Galvin Piper, who would have been 100 years old this past December [December 7, 2011], has had her grantmaking legacy in Maricopa County for 11 years now through Piper Trust. The diversity and quality shown in today’s collection of grant awards is a meaningful representation of Mrs. Piper’s wishes to strengthen and grow our community—she would be pleased,” said Judy Jolley Mohraz, Ph.D., president and CEO, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.
The Trust’s investment to expand ASU’s Center for Sustainable Health will further the Center’s innovative work addressing ...

Online long-running design company LogoBee will host its first “Web Design Makeover” contest, the prizes of which are web design remakes for eligible nonprofit organizations.
LogoBee has already held several Logo Design Makeovers in the past, which as one can guess consisted in free logo design for the winning companies. Indeed, the award-winning company specializes in custom logo design, but it also offers web design.
LogoBee will have its designers create a whole new website for the selected nonprofit organizations. “This is LogoBee`s way of contributing its skills and experience for the good of society. A good cause deserves recognition after all, and professionals in the field of logo and web design have the moral obligation to contribute”, states Pavel Rokhmanko, one of the owners and designers of LogoBee.

The Council on Foundations today released the most recent Affinity Group Management Survey, a general status update of the affinity group sector and its response to economic conditions. The survey allows affinity groups to benchmark management practices, provides insight into management trends, and enables comparisons of practices over time.
“Affinity groups are an integral part of the neural network that serves our sector. The latest data shows that despite the difficult economic environment, they are successfully adapting and continue to excel in providing quality service to grantmakers,” said Jeff Clarke, interim president and CEO of the Council on Foundations. “As programming and grantmaking support goals are met, affinity groups become more self-sufficient, rely less on consultants, and find creative ways to sustain their work. They continue to be quite valued within the philanthropic sector.”
Highlights of the survey:

AARP Foundation today announced a new grant making program that supports the organization’s commitment to changing the lives of vulnerable older Americans by meeting their everyday needs — food, housing, income and personal connections.
The AARP Foundation Grants Program will fund a diverse range of promising projects that help create long-term, sustainable solutions to the problems faced by low-income adults age 50 and older. These projects may range from basic education to interventions spearheaded by organizations that address the social and behavioral aspects of these problems for older Americans.
“Hunger, housing, income and personal connections are basic needs that, particularly in these tough economic times, are often difficult for vulnerable older Americans to meet,” said AARP Foundation President Jo Ann Jenkins. “This grant program will help build our knowledge base, conquer these solvable issues and ultimately help older people who are struggling live with hope, dignity and security.”

Nonprofit Finance Fund has been awarded $1.5 million by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund) to shore up the financial health of organizations serving economically disadvantaged communities. NFF will use the funds to help education, health, and human service agencies maintain operations and expand services to people in need.
“The recession has limited the amount of public, philanthropic, and private capital available to nonprofits,” said Norah McVeigh, Managing Director of Financial Services at NFF. “The organizations that will benefit from the CDFI awards play a crucial role in improving conditions in the country’s most distressed communities, but many are unable to obtain needed financing from conventional lenders.”
The Department of Treasury announced the CDFI Fund awards today in Chicago. NFF was among those receiving the largest allocations in the most recent round of awards, which at $142.3 million represents the greatest single round of monetary ...
