A newly released Bridgespan Group study of U.S. government funded human service nonprofits shows that while many have survived the harsh economy of the last few years, 91% fear that looming federal funding cuts will “cause significant problems” for them.

Nearly two-thirds said that they expect their government funding to shrink over the next two-to-three years, with the harshest cuts anticipated to programs serving the most vulnerable populations such as the elderly and homeless. Adding to that fear is uncertainty as to how the cuts will be made and what their exact impact will be.
Rising costs of healthcare, pensions, Social Security and Medicare, driven by changing demographics, are drawing down dollars available for social services. According to Daniel Stid, Bridgespan partner and co-author of the study with his colleague Vishal Shah, “This grinding down on all other budget items is about to accelerate in the wake of the Budget Control Act of 2011 ...

McKim Consulting, a leader in nonprofit sustainability solutions just released the report for their first annual Nonprofit Leadership Survey 2011.
The survey was sent to over 1500 leaders in the greater Los Angeles nonprofit community and reveals trends that are significant to all involved. The Nonprofit Leadership Survey reveals that nonprofits are currently challenged and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future.
“Looking closely at the results, this really is the proverbial ‘canary in the coalmine,’” says Robert McKim, CEO. “We already knew that there were many nonprofits that would be suffering in the wake of the economy. Just how badly and how severe the impact is likely to be in the year to come, well, even if we sort of knew, seeing it in black and white made it worse.”
Not surprising, agencies are experiencing increased need for their services and few expect to reduce their activities or ...

The Colorado Trust today announced it has made $28,500 in grants to strengthen the work of five nonprofit organizations working to improve the health and well-being of rural Coloradans. The Colorado Trust, a grantmaking foundation dedicated to expanding health coverage and improving health care for all Coloradans, made the grants after meeting with nonprofit organizations at Rural Philanthropy Days in Saguache, Colorado.
Rural Philanthropy Days (RPD) connects funders with nonprofit organizations that serve rural Colorado. This three-day event, which takes place twice each year, was created in 1991 by the Community Resource Center (CRC) to strengthen nonprofit-funder relations and to address critical needs in rural communities across Colorado.
“Growing up in a doctor’s family in La Junta, Colorado, I know firsthand how important access to health is in rural communities,” said Ned Calonge, MD, President and CEO of The Colorado Trust. “Rural Philanthropy Days offers us a unique opportunity to see the ...

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) today circulated a letter urging the Senate Finance Committee and the Members of Congress who were members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction to preserve the current charitable deduction during future tax discussions.
AFP, the chair of a coalition of nonprofit organizations and umbrella groups, anticipates that Congress will continue to pursue ways to reduce the deficit and implement tax reforms in 2012, even though the Join Select Committee on Deficit Reduction was unable to agree upon any recommendations.
During the joint committee’s work, it was reported that Republicans were open to eliminating certain tax deductions, including charitable deductions, for the wealthy in exchange for a permanent reduction of the marginal tax rates set under President George W. Bush. Simultaneously, the Democrats appeared open to capping the tax reduction that high income taxpayers can get from tax expenditures (such as itemized deductions like the ...

The Winn-Dixie Foundation announced today it is investing nearly $1.4 million in neighborhoods across the Southeast through partnerships with 116 nonprofit organizations, providing a broad range of services critical to helping communities flourish and individuals triumph.
“Winn Dixie is at the heart of the neighborhoods we serve,” said Mary Kellmanson, marketing group vice-president of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., and president of the Winn-Dixie Foundation. “We are inspired by the stories we hear from past recipients, and we look forward to seeing the good work our newest partners will do in the coming year.
Holiday time is the season for giving. These days, when household budgets are stretched, consumers naturally want to make the most of their precious contributions. The Better Business Bureau of New York can offer tips to help you avoid charity scams and enrich your experience as a philanthropist.
Avoid Scams
1. Be sure the group is a charity. Not every group that solicits money at holiday time is a charity. And in 2011, the Internal Revenue Service stripped over a quarter of a million charities of their tax exempt status, after they failed to file required paperwork for several years in a row. If you plan to deduct your contribution, take a moment to check the current list of tax exempt charities through the search utility in “Publication 78” at the IRS website, www.irs.gov.
2. Find out if the charity is properly registered with the state. See whether the charity is registered to solicit in ...

The Brooklyn Community Foundation has announced 37 new grants to Brooklyn-serving nonprofits totaling $668,000, bringing its 2011 giving to $4.5 million to Brooklyn’s nonprofit community.
Founded in 2009 to build a stronger, broader giving community in Brooklyn, the Community Foundation seeks to generate new resources to address significant needs in New York City’s most populous borough. The Brooklyn Community Foundation’s grantmaking supports the best ideas and most effective nonprofit programs throughout Brooklyn’s 70 neighborhoods, with the strongest investment in areas with high economic need and under resourced community facilities.
“With the generous assistance of our growing community of donors, we’re deploying critical resources into our neighborhoods to take on our borough’s most daunting challenges,” said Brooklyn Community Foundation President Marilyn Gelber. “Our deep knowledge of Brooklyn, its communities, and its nonprofits means that donors to the Foundation will see their dollars go further and have greater impact on the issues they care ...

The Kresge Foundation will provide $10 million to a loan fund that makes financing available to small businesses and nonprofit organizations in low- and moderate-income communities.
The largest in Kresge’s history, the loan represents a milestone in the foundation’s move to augment its grantmaking with a more aggressive use of program related investments, loan guarantees, and other forms of social investments.
The Troy, Mich.-based Kresge joins Wells Fargo Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to fund as many as five community development financial institutions per year through the NEXT Awards for Opportunity Finance. Those awards are administered by Opportunity Finance Network, the leading national network of community development financial institutions.
Community development financial institutions are private-sector financial institutions that make low-interest loans to organizations typically not served by commercial lenders.
Often referred to as CDFIs, community development financial institutions provide capital for housing, community facilities, such as day care centers ...

‘Tis the season for spreading holiday cheer and Walmart is doing just that. On December 12, the company kicked off its “12 Days of Giving” campaign, awarding over $1.5 million to nonprofits that were nominated by Facebook users.
By the end of the campaign, 145 grant recipients in all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico will be honored. Twenty-five nonprofits that have stepped up to fight hunger are receiving a total of $130,000 on the first day of giving.
Walmart’s 12-day call for submissions resulted in more than 5,400 nominations from Facebook users who shared photos and short descriptions of a nonprofit’s impact in its local community. A panel from the Walmart Foundation reviewed submissions and selected winners with a focus on organizations that are providing basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing and baby supplies.
“The response to our campaign was incredible – the organizations selected and the extraordinary people ...
