Women’s eNews, a nonprofit news service covering issues of particular concern to women, has announced the 21 Leaders for the 21st Century 2012. They will be honored Thursday, May 3, 2012 at a gala dinner held in New York’s Jumeirah Essex House.
“The 21 Leaders list is a rare ‘best of’ list that doesn’t rely on the achievements of men and champions a focus on women’s lives around the world,” said Rita Henley Jensen, founder and editor in chief of Women’s eNews. “We include one man on the list,” Henley Jensen added, “because male allies in the push for equality are essential and recognition of their work is scarce as well.”
The 21 Leaders for the 21st Century 2012 have all demonstrated outstanding achievements in business, education, philanthropy and the media. Seven honorees are intensely engaged in changing the power balance in the political world through training and recruitment of ...

Minnesota grantmaking to the arts decreased by 10 percent in 2009 from 2008 – and dropped 19 percent from 2004 levels – according to new research by the Minnesota Council on Foundations (MCF).

The research sample gave $105.7 million to the arts in 2009, the most recent time period for which complete data are available. The sample includes 100 of Minnesota’s top grantmakers and a portion of their grants that represent about two thirds of the state’s philanthropic giving for the year.

The share of Minnesota grant dollars going to the arts has decreased steadily in recent years, from 15 percent in 2004, to 11 percent in 2009. Arts grantmaking falls behind giving to education, human services, and public affairs/society benefit.

“The poor economy and changing priorities at foundations have hit arts organizations especially hard,” says Bill King, MCF President. “Many funders have reduced arts giving and prioritized human services and education giving ...

Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., a non-profit, tax-exempt entity established by Brown Rudnick LLP, is pleased to announce the recipients of the Foundation’s 2011-12 Relationship Grants program.
For over a decade, the Foundation has been awarding annual Relationship Grants to tax-exempt organizations for programs designed to improve inner-city education in a city where Brown Rudnick has domestic offices. These annual grants seek to improve inner-city education by forming a relationship with a non-profit organization that optimally includes providing financial support, pro bono legal representation and volunteer time.
As part of the grant selection process, in late spring, the Foundation sought initial letters of interest from grant applicants. After reviewing 120 letters of interest and considering two dozen full proposals this summer, the Foundation awarded 12 Relationship Grants to non-profit organizations in Boston, Harford, Providence, New York and Washington DC. All grants have been awarded to correspond with the 2011-12 academic school ...

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) today jointly announced the largest-ever cash gifts to both organizations totaling $115 million. The record gifts will help acquire additional works of art and support medical research. Thirteen additional charitable organizations will receive the remaining $10 million.
The trusts, created in the 1950s by Arthur Graham and Margaret Branch Glasgow, terminated earlier this summer with the death of their son-in-law, Ambrose Congreve, 104, in London. VMFA, VCU and the other charities will receive the gifts according to percentages set forth in the trusts of Mr. and Mrs. Glasgow. These will be the largest cash gifts to both VMFA and VCU. Nearly $70 million will go to VMFA to create a restricted art purchase endowment and to support its recent expansion, and approximately $45 million will go to VCU to support the cure and prevention of cancer and other degenerative ...

Duke University trustee David M. Rubenstein will give $13.6 million to the Duke University Libraries in support of the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library, President Richard H. Brodhead announced Wednesday.
The donation is the largest ever to the libraries. In recognition of Rubenstein’s gift, the special collections library will be renamed the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, following approval by the Board of Trustees.
The gift is the largest commitment Rubenstein has made to Duke. In 2009, he donated $5.75 million to help the Sanford School of Public Policy meet a $40 million fundraising target for its transition from an institute to Duke’s 10th school. In 2002, he contributed $5 million toward the completion of Sanford’s Rubenstein Hall.
“A great library is central to the university’s transmission of knowledge,” said Brodhead. “Nationally, David Rubenstein has been a strong supporter of libraries and archives, and of the way the ...

The Center for Arab American Philanthropy today announced 12 grants to empower grassroots Arab American organizations around the country. The grantees’ work includes assisting refugees, supporting student success and educating the public through arts and culture.
In its third funding cycle, the Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) will distribute $53,000. The center has awarded nearly $180,000 since it began making grants in 2009.
CAAP is the only national Arab American philanthropic support organization in the United States. It builds on the tradition of Arab American giving by working with donors to invest their charitable dollars in organizations and programs making the greatest impact.
“Through general grant-making and donor-advised funds, CAAP empowers individuals to fulfill their philanthropic goals within and beyond the Arab American community,” said Maha Freij, deputy executive director and CFO of ACCESS, CAAP’s parent organization. “By giving through CAAP, donors are leaving a legacy of Arab American philanthropy for the ...

With nonprofit organizations facing continued pressures to increase services with fewer revenues, the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust awarded $2.6 million in grants for Community Relief in Maricopa County, Arizona, representing 55 percent of total 2nd quarter 2011 grantmaking of $4.6 million.
The undesignated relief grants include:

$502,500 in Community Relief grants to 22 arts and culture organizations.
$995,000 in Community Relief grants to eight afterschool food programs and eight community-based healthcare and dental clinics and mobile healthcare vans.
$750,000 in Community Relief grants to 17 emergency food and shelter agencies.
$300,000 for the third year of the Homelessness and Hunger Funders Collaborative Project.

“The Piper Trustees continue to assess urgent needs in the county. While a foundation cannot replace public funding it can help with emergency necessities for recently impoverished families. It can respond to the soaring number of children in afterschool programs where snack time represents a major meal for many children,” said ...

The 2011 Pew Fellows, four of whom are first-time applicants to the program, were chosen in recognition of their extraordinary artistic achievements to date. Each $60,000 fellowship is granted over a 1- to 2-year period and may be awarded to artists at any stage of their careers.

The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage has awarded $1,013,000 through the Philadelphia Theatre Initiative (PTI) to 10 theater companies, performing arts presenters, and independent theater artists.
This year’s funded projects revolve around moments of laughter, tragedy, and magic, offering theater-goers in the Philadelphia region an exciting variety of dramatic experiences from which to choose. Highlights include the first and only U.S. performance of an eye-opening work about disability and difference in our society; a multilayered magic show from a local theater artist who has deep roots in the art of illusion; a powerful work from a Polish playwright that dramatizes the atrocities of the Holocaust and examines its lasting legacies of hatred, grief, and shame; and an exploration of women and comedy that will explode female comedic stereotypes and celebrate everyday humor.
“All of this year’s grants involve either the creation of new work or American premieres,” says Fran Kumin, director ...
